Finding Your Steam ID &
Accessing The Source Engine Console
How Do I Find My Steam ID?
Your steam ID has nothing to do with the Steam Community or Steam Friends list, though Valve has given your Steam user page a similar name. Your Steam ID is the internal string of characters which Valve uses to identify your specific Steam installation and keep track of what games you own. We use player Steam IDs to identify clan members on our servers.
To find your Steam ID while playing on a =s!x= server, just type the word
steamid in chat, and it should tell you. If that doesn't work, however, simply follow these instructions:
- Connect to any public game server on the internet with Half Life 2: Deathmatch, or any other Source engine based game, such as Counter Strike: Source or Team Fortress 2.
- Open the console. See below if you do not know how to do this.
- Run this command: status
- When you press enter, several lines of information should appear.
- One of those lines has your player name on it. Find it.
- Your Steam ID will appear on that line just after your name. It will start with STEAM_ and end with a lot of numbers (frex: STEAM_0:1:2345678). In the example here the Steam ID on each line is highlighted in green:

How Do I Open The Console?
If you do not know how to open the console, follow these instructions:
- Open Half Life 2: Deathmatch, or any other Source engine based game, such as Counter Strike: Source or Team Fortress 2.
- Go to 'Options', choose the 'Keyboard' tab, and then click the 'Advanced' button.
- Check the box to enable the "Developer's Console"
- Click 'OK'
- Click 'Apply'
The console should now appear when you press the tilde key (~) in the upper left hand corner of your keyboard (US keyboard layouts).
If for some reason the key in the top left corner of your keyboard does not work or you are unable to access the "Enable developer console" checkbox, (a known problem for some of our international friends) you can try these steps as a last resort:
- In Steam.. Go to the Games tab.
- Right-click on Half Life 2: Deathmatch, or any other Source engine based game, such as Counter Strike: Source or Team Fortress 2.
- Choose Properties.
- Click "Set launch options".
- Type this in the field exactly (do not forget the hyphen): -console
- Click OK
- Click Close
- Launch your game.
When the game opens you should find the console open by default. As long as you do not close it, it should remain open while you connect to a server or do anything else, and it will be there waiting for you when you press escape to access the main game menu.
